Accomodation
The Hotel Menelaion was named after the king of the ancient Sparta, Menelao. Its position, its architecture and its scale have played a key role in its promotion as well as in its involvement in Sparta’s historic “adventures”, especially during the Second World War.
It is worth mentioning that the hotel had been requisitioned not only by the Italian but also by the German troops, whereas after 1944 it was used as the headquarters of the Greek Popular Liberalisation Army and the Greek army as well. After the end of the civil war the hotel was once again returned to its rightful owners, the Stathopoulos family.
Menelaion has in fact been a point of reference for the historical city of Sparta and of Peloponnese as well.
